Beyond the Seminar Room: SIIA Students Explore Sustainability in the Global South

In mid-August 2026, twelve MSc students and three doctoral researchers from Schumpeter School travelled to Nairobi, Kenya, for a two-week seminar “Sustainable and Inclusive Innovation in Sub-Saharan Africa” (SIIA). Hosted by our partners at Strathmore University, the group moved from consultancy theory in Wuppertal to hands-on fieldwork with three Kenyan organisations: Ololo Farm and Lodge, Umande Trust, and Drop Access, tackling challenges ranging from regenerative farming and water and sanitation in informal settlements to solar-powered cold-chain logistics. The programme also included a guest lecture by UNESCO Chair holder Prof. Da Silva and visits to Nairobi climate innovation hubs. Beyond the seminar room, students explored Kenya through a day trip to Nairobi National Park, a walk through Karura Forest, and visits to coffee and tea farms. Supported by Prof. Philipp Trotter, Chair of Sustainability Management and Prof. Christine Volkmann, UNESCO Chair for Entrepreneurship and Intercultural Management, the excursion offered a firsthand look at sustainability transformation in practice.
